Kate made her unobtrusive way through the room, returning a few smiles and waves, and hoisted herself onto a barstool. She grinned at Maggie Schaeffer who stood behind the bar, Nike-shod feet spread, arms crossed, her deep-set, hooded dark eyes scrutinizing Kate, the silvery lettering of DYKE POWER on her lavender sweatshirt picking up the silver of her close-cropped hair. Smoke rose in lazy curls from the cigarette in an ashtray behind her.

“The usual?” Maggie inquired in a soft voice incongruous to the burly, assertive-looking woman from which it emerged.
